Over time, I’ve built a travel setup that reflects how I actually move through the world. I tend to pack a fair amount of tech, but everything has a purpose. I travel with a Chromebook because it is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace if something happens to it. If it gets dropped, damaged, or goes missing, it does not cause the same stress as traveling with a high-end laptop. Headphones are another must. I listen to a lot of music, but they also serve another purpose when I’m out and about. Wearing them sends a clear signal that I’m not looking to be interrupted, and sometimes that quiet space is exactly what I need.
My tech kit also includes a universal travel plug adapter, which is essential for international trips, along with a battery backup, USB cables, headphone cords, and a portable speaker. None of these take up much space, but every one of them has saved me at some point. Being able to charge devices on the go or play music while relaxing in my room makes travel feel a little more like home.
Outside of tech, I keep things practical and packable. A portable rain jacket is always with me. It folds up, zips into itself, and can be tucked into a bag or clipped onto my backpack. I also pack a foldable travel bag for the return trip, because I almost always come home with more than I left with. A casual daypack holds my keys, wallet, and small essentials when I’m out exploring, while a lightweight packable backpack comes with me on day adventures. It holds everything I need for the day, like water, headphones, my wallet, and sometimes even an extra set of clothes. I also bring a laundry bag to keep worn clothes separate and a canvas bag specifically for vinyl records. That deserves its own post, which is coming soon.
Clothing choices matter just as much as gear. I prefer quick-dry pants because if they get wet, they don’t stay wet, and they are much easier to wash and dry on the road. Depending on the length of the trip, I usually bring two pairs of shoes so I can rotate them. If rain is in the forecast, my waterproof tennis shoes always make the cut. Comfort and flexibility go a long way when you’re constantly moving.
I’m always curious about what other travelers swear by. Are there items on this list you already pack, or anything you’d add to yours after reading this? And what’s one piece of travel gear you can’t leave home without?
